James J. Certa, Director

Jim Certa’s accomplished 30-year career in the insurance and reinsurance arenas has featured unique versatility. Jim’s leadership, technical capability, marketing resourcefulness, and communication instincts have generated quantifiable bottom line results for his clients and the formation of extensive long-term relationships.

Recent Achievements - Jim is currently overseeing the runoff of the Insurance Corporation of New York contracting book, and serving as an analytic source for Trenwick America Services Corporation on a myriad of reinsurance issues with its ceding company portfolio.

Jim has brought cost certainty to The Insurance Corporation of New York by reducing the pending claims inventory by 32% in over a year and by bringing stability to the loss and expense reserves. He has recruited talented claims professionals, many of whom have worked with Jim for many years, to contribute to the responsible runoff of The Insurance Corporation of New York’s liabilities.

Jim came to The Princeton Partnership after four years at The Risk Management Planning Group where he led the General Liability division and launched their Audit & Consulting Practice. Jim was selected from a competitive group of claims professionals to provide a reserve analysis to The City of Santa Monica for its “Farmer’s Market Litigation.”

While serving at The Risk Management Planning Group, he was the east coast mediation representative for The Attorney’s Liability Protection Society, and provided customized file analysis. In addition, Jim’s document inspection and expert testimony proved to be instrumental in recovering $16,500,000 for The State of New York from a truculent reinsurer.

Under Jim’s direction, the General Liability division at The Risk Management Planning Group managed the claims for clients such as Lexington, United National, Discovery Insurance, Fireman’s Fund, Arch, and The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. His staff consistently achieved performance grades of 96% or better on client best practice audits.

Career History - Jim learned the fundamentals of the insurance profession at the Contracting Division of Liberty Mutual in New York. That invaluable training in investigation, coverage, negotiating, and reporting has served Jim well throughout his career.

Following Liberty Mutual, Jim joined The Jefferson Insurance Company where he gained experience with multiple jurisdictions serving as a supervisor. He orchestrated considerable cost savings for The Jefferson on Dram Shop and Police Misconduct matters in hostile territories such as Los Angeles County and Wayne County in Michigan. He was also the featured presenter at reinsurance meetings in both audit and marketing forums.

Leveraging his negotiating resourcefulness, Jim then brought quality results for INAPRO (Cigna)’s Attorney Malpractice division, including consistent savings in the millions of dollars that were recognized in Texas, Florida, and British Columbia. For the next five years, Jim focused on developing a foothold in the reinsurance profession by learning and growing in the audit functions at North American Re (Now Swiss Re), where he also directed, organized and recruited speakers for client seminars.

With a strong base of reinsurance fundamentals, Jim took on the role of audit manager at The Caronia Corporation where he coordinated a 16-person audit team for litigation support initiatives and provided expert witness services to both domestic and foreign clients. This was followed by six years at The Holborn Agency, where Jim attained unprecedented success in commutations, commercial resolutions, and client collections. Vigorous client advocacy was the lynchpin of these success stories.

Prior to joining The Risk Management Planning Group, Jim was an entrepreneur providing mediation representation, expert witness services and collateral review audits to his clients. His successes were highlighted by his lead role in directing an audit team on a records inspection in a multi-million dollar IPO bondholder lawsuit that culminated in a recovery that exceeded projections.

Education - Jim earned his B.A. in English Literature from American University. He is a licensed adjuster in 13 states.

Member/ Association - Jim is a member of The Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel and has been appointed to the Insurance Industry Committee. Jim is also an Insurance Coverage member for The Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel. He is a Board Member for The Autism Direct Fund.
